2009 Starr Ranch Junior Biologists Summer Camp

Start Date: June 08, 2009 End Date: July 24, 2009
Starr Ranch Sanctuary, a 4000-acre Audubon preserve east of Dove Canyon and Coto de Caza, announces our 2009 summer camp for kids. Children ages 8 – 13 are invited to join the Starr Ranch scientific team as "Starr Ranch Junior Biologists" (SRJB) to have fun learning how scientists study wild animals and their habitats. SRJB I kids explore native habitats and have fun with some of the techniques scientists use to study wild animals. We’re offering two sessions of SRJB I: June 8-12 or July 6–10. In SRJB II, children participate in research on large mammals, owls, and stream ecology. Two sessions of SRJB II (SRJB I required) run June 15–19 or July 13–17. Both SRJB I and II meet Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – noon; Friday 7 – 10 p.m. SRJB III (SRJB I and II required) is offered for older children ages 10 - 13, who camp at the Ranch and do an advanced study on the animals and habitats introduced in SRJB II. Two different sessions of SRJB III meet June 22–June 26 (Ecology of Bell Creek) and July 20–July 24 (Effects of Ranch Roads on Wildlife). SRJB III will meet Monday – Wednesday, 8 a.m. – noon, and Thursday 1 p.m. – Friday noon (campout). Cost is $150 for 1 week ($25 discount per additional sibling or session). Introduction to GREEN DESIGN

Wednesdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost: $175.00 at the Environmental Nature Center This class will introduce students to the values and philosophy of Green Design through the exploration of environmental issues and sustainable materials and methods used in the design/build industry. Emphasis will be to stimulate student awareness of the implications that our design decisions have on our living spaces and on the environment. The class will evaluate the materials, processes and applications used in sustainable and environmentally responsible design. Certificates of Completion will be awarded to students based on their achievements at the end of the class. The instructor, Cathryn Sotier, has been in the interior design field since 1996 with experience in both residential and commercial design. With the earth's population growing by one billion every dozen years, there is a clear connection between human population growth and virtually every global challenge from poverty to climate change to species extinction. The presentation includes a brief overview of the causes of rapid population growth, its impacts, and how we can meet and overcome this challenge. Population Connection is the national grassroots population organization that educates young people and advocates progressive action to stabilize world population at a level that can be sustained by Earth's resources. Population Connection has 150,000 members, supporters, and participating educators. Museum Docent Training. Volunteer!

Come learn about the Environmental Nature Center and find out how rewarding volunteering here can be. Museum docents staff the front desk, greet visitors, and provide information at the ENC’s new state-of-the-art learning facility. Training includes an overview of frequently asked questions, a description of the new building’s sustainability features, and a brief narrative of the ENC’s history and current programs. Docents will view a 1-hour presentation, tour the ENC building and grounds, and learn about the phone system. Docents staff the front desk on Saturdays from 8AM – 12PM or from 12 – 4PM.
